Birds All Around

At the moment, two super cute tufted titmice are feasting at our rear birdfeeder directly outside my desk window. Earlier today, when I went outside, the front tree with the suet feeder was hosting four black-capped chickadees, a downy woodpecker, and a white-breasted nuthatch. Only the nuthatch seemed skittesh of me, moving up into the high branches as I approached. Two of the chickadees actually flew closer to me watching from just a couple of feet away from my head.

In our wood, I saw so many chickadees, downy woodpeckers, and at least one hairy woodpecker. There may have been more in the shadowy areas where the sun didn't reach. With so many of our red pines killed by pine borers a few years back, our wood gets a lot more sun than it use to. This has led to quite the growth of hemlocks in the understory. I have started checking them for hemlock woolly adelgid regularly. It would be nice if some of them could grow up. I love the color and vibrancy evergreens add to a winter wood.

Yesterday's Valentine's pizza feast went off without a hitch. I thought my pizza in particular was extra delicious.
